The Michigan Construction READY Going PRO Apprenticeship Readiness program is a 6-month pre-apprenticeship training program providing the opportunity for 26 people to begin their career working in Michigan’s construction industry.
 

Utilizing funding from the Michigan Talent Investment Agency, the Michigan Construction Foundation has assembled some of Mid-Michigan’s largest construction employers and a team of expert education and training partners all dedicated to helping successful candidates develop the skills, qualifications and character necessary to work in today’s construction industry.
 

To receive an invitation to join the program and be awarded a full-ride MC READY Going PRO scholarship (valued at $14,000), applicants will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be between 18 – 26 years old.
  • Live in Ingham, Clinton or Eaton county.
  • Be eligible to legally work in the United States.
  • Have a high school diploma, GED or enrolled in a GED/Credit Recovery program.
  • Provide own transportation to the various training locations.
  • Make a convincing statement as to why you want to work in the construction industry.
     

Additionally, all applicants will be screened for the following:

  • Criminal background check. (Ex-offenders are welcome to apply.)
  • Drug screening for use of narcotics.
  • Valid driver’s license.
     

For those ready to dig deep and go pro in Michigan’s construction industry, the MC READY Going PRO program starts with a 2-month Related Technical Instruction (RTI) boot camp making you job-site ready. Followed by a paid On-the-Job Learning (OJL) experience with one of our sponsoring employers lasting up to 4-months.
 

Participants will earn while they learn with an RTI stipend based on $10/hr as well as be potentially offered a paid OJL experience paying between $12 - $14/hr.
 

The program will end by September of 2018 with a hiring fair and graduation ceremony.
 

After completing the MC READY Going PRO program, participants will be ready to enter a full-time job or registered apprenticeship now having the skills, qualifications and character and start their construction career. 

Schedule
The MC READY Going Pro program starts on March 12, 2018 with classes ending June 8, 2018.  Classes meet typically Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00AM - 3:30PM in various locations in Lansing.  Some weeks will have a varied schedule.  See boot camp details below. 

On-the-job learning experiences can start as soon as May 7th, 2018.  

All program activity ends on September 30th, 2018.

Related Technical Instruction Boot Camp
The MC READY Going PRO program offers participants the chance to earn while they learn valuable skills, qualifications showcasing their dedication to becoming a construction worker. Participants can expect to learn the real-world of construction as they dig deep to go pro in Michigan’s construction industry. *Note:  Schedule is subject to change.

 

Greater Michigan Construction Academy NCCER Core Training
This 6-week training session will introduce participants to the construction trades providing hands-on learning in construction math, hand tools, power tools, construction drawings, along with basic safety, rigging and material handling.  Successful completers will be issued an NCCER Core, nationally recognized industry certification that can be applied to other GMCA apprenticeship programs.


Classes will be held from March 12 – April 20 in at the GMCA Training Center in Lansing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00AM – 3:30PM.

           
MC READY Certification
MC READY provides basic information on pathways to construction careers specific to Michigan laws, regulations, and industry practices.  Basic employability skills, trust building, and other life-skills awareness content will be provided.  Participants will understand what the 3 W’s are and how important valuing work is to yourself, your family, your employer and your community.

 

Classes will be held between April 23 – May 3.  

Week 1 classes will be held at the Michigan Concrete Association Training Center in Lansing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00AM – 3:30PM.

Week 2 classes will be held at the MITA Building located in Okemos on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00AM – 3:30PM.
                                                   

MITA OSHA 10 & CPR/First Aid
Safety, CPR and first aid training are a must for every construction employer.  With instruction provided by the Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association, participants will not only learn construction safety basics, they will also learn life-saving skills that can be used anywhere.  Participants will learn how to protect themselves and others from the hazards which are part of the construction industry. 

Classes will be between April 30 – May 5 at the MITA Building in Okemos on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00AM – 3:30PM.
                

AIS Heavy Equipment Experience
Knowing the power of heavy equipment, the MC READY Going PRO program will give participants the chance to sit in the seat of actual heavy equipment.  The AIS Heavy Equipment Training Institute is providing a one-day heavy equipment experience showing participants how they can actually change the world with these highly complicated machines.  Participants will be able to operate a dozer, excavator, loader and backhoe along with hearing about opportunities as a heavy equipment operator or maintenance technician.

Classes will be between April 27 & May 5 at the AIS Heavy Equipment Training Institute in Lansing on one of two Fridays within the program schedule from 8:00AM – 4:00PM.
               

LCC Design & Construction Management 100 – An Introduction to the Built Environment
This 5-week course covers concepts in the fields of architecture, building trades, construction management, energy management, and civil technology.  Students are guided through the entire process of building construction starting with design and surveying and finishing with the completion of construction and the commissioning process. 

Classes will be between May 7 – June 8 held at the LCC West Campus on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00AM to 2:30PM.
               

MCA Introduction to Concrete
The Michigan Concrete Association is the premiere provider of concrete finishing and testing training in Michigan.  With virtually every construction project using concrete, during this 2-day introduction participants can expect to learn the basics of concrete and concrete testing.

Classes will be between May 29 & May 31 held at the MCA Training Center in Lansing on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00AM – 3:30PM.
 

ON-THE-JOB LEARNING EXPERIENCE
A critical part of any construction training program is to get out there and actually do construction! Starting in early May, the MC READY Going PRO program provides participants a shot at paid OJL experiences with some of Mid-Michigan’s largest construction employers.

Building on the commitment made by The MacKenzie Companies, Davis Construction and M.L. Chartier, the OJL experience will test participants to see if they really have the character for a career in construction.  Some OJL slots are full-time.  Some will be part-time.

Your OJL experience can start as early as May 7th, 2018.

MC READY GOING PRO PARTICIPANT POTENTIAL OUTCOMES

  • Earn up to $1300 to go to class.
