CSE HISTORY

Detroit middle & high school students experience one of the best school field trips of the year: The Construction Science Expo!

Working alongside skilled labor apprentices and trainers and using their problem-solving strategies in construction design, they should visually and physically see why these types of occupations in this industry are growing faster than all others at a rate that is expected to continue through 2026*.

Over 9,000 students have been invited to this annual hands-on expo over the last 10 years through the Detroit schools “Navigation to Success” Program run by the Black Caucus Foundation, with more than 50 activities presented by over 25 industry professionals. An Expo that Doug Needham, President of the Michigan Aggregates Association and committee co-leader, says is “the avenue where we have consistently brought together both skilled trades and construction design industry experts to create a pathway to future employment for these young people. We are invested in their future and ours.”

Held at the Durfee Innovation Center in Detroit, MI & at the Impression 5 Science Center in Lansing, MI.

Students will have the opportunity to develop transportation and labor skills through MDOT’s Road to Work program. They will be exposed to the latest technology and current industry standards by engaging with civil and design engineers. By operating excavators, cranes, or heavy machinery simulators, students will be inspired to consider a future career with the numerous employers, engineering companies, union training centers, associations, and colleges involved in this thriving and in-demand industry.
